"Single White Farmhouse" by Heather Shaw
in Year's Best Fantasy 6 (Tachyon)
I love stories that present a strange premise as a matter of fact, needing no explanation or exposition. Such is the case in this wonderfully charming tale by Heather Shaw, in which buildings are animals that reproduce much like any other mammal. Shaw takes her outlandish premise and runs with it, bringing her readers along for the fun and crazy ride.
